Most service businesses aren't charging enough for what they're delivering

In brief
Most service businesses aren't charging enough for what they're delivering. They're pricing for the work. The market's paying for the result. I watched this play out with a client last month - a boutique ops agency billing $3k/month per client for "strategy and execution." The work was solid.

Most service businesses aren't charging enough for what they're delivering.
They're pricing for the work. The market's paying for the result.
I watched this play out with a client last month - a boutique ops agency billing $3k/month per client for "strategy and execution." The work was solid. Clients were happy. But churn was 8% monthly and they were running ragged.
They weren't hungry. Their clients were. Some were generating $80k in new pipeline off one email sequence.
We rebuilt their offer around output guarantees - a minimum of X pipeline generated per engagement, with a 50% upside kicker.
What changed:
1. They stopped selling time and started selling a number. The conversations shifted from "here's what we'll do" to "here's what you'll get."
2. They added a simple tracking dashboard clients could check anytime. The proof lived outside their inbox.
3. They built a 48-hour escalation protocol for any deliverable that missed its mark. Clients felt covered.
4. They fired the bottom 20% who were there for the relationship, not the result. Instant energy shift.
5. Their pricing went from $3k to $7.5k base with no pushback. The first new client closed in 4 days.
6. Their average engagement stretched from 4 months to 11. Churn dropped to under 2%.
7. They stopped doing favors and started holding clients accountable for their part of the result. That alone cut scope creep by 40%.
The surprise - their delivery team preferred it. Clear expectations, less hand-holding, fewer bullshit revisions.
The hard truth is most pricing problems aren't pricing problems - they're a gap between what you're promising and what you're accountable for. Close that gap and everything else rebalances.
